Sussex Skeet Doubles. Dartford.
Great weather, but not a lot of support from our own County!! Only eight shooters representing us, poor turnout.
But, the day was great fun and some interesting results. Tony Smith won the County Championship shield and badge for best senior, with a score of 98/100, again a personal best in this discipline following on from his performance at the British. Martyn Jones won the Veteran title, with a score of 93/100. Patsy Last won her first ever badge for the Ladies, with a score of 63/100. The Juniors and Colts badges were not awarded because no entrants in these classes. Well done to all how took part and thank you.

A great day, well supported with over two hundred shooters and lovely weather, sun shone on everyone! The raffle alone, raised over £300, which will go straight back into supporting the youngsters representing the County for next year.
Results as follows:
High Gun and Champion went to Darren Barton for a great effort,91/100.  His sponsor Graham Oades from Easy Hit was very pleased.
The Ladies title was taken by Christine Atkinson with a score of 76/100. The Junior title was taken by Guy Franklin, with a score of 89/100, a well know name in the OSK but taking time out to support this shoot. The Colts title was taken by Dan Tarrant with a score of 64/100, another shooter taking time out from his usual discipline UT with good results. The Veterans title was taken by Martin Holden with a score of 86/100.
A big thank you to the Kerwood family and Northall workers for all their help and support, in putting this event on to raise funding for next year!

Have a go day, Northall.
Again, this year we were lucky with the weather and the sun shone and the people kept turning up! Some amazing people, who had never picked up a gun before, had excellent results, one of which was young Jacob Drudge, scoring 9/10, only age 12. A face we shall see on the grounds no doubt! Over 100 new shooters, of which about half, paid to have a second go. Several booked up lessons, there and then and we expect to see many new faces around the local grounds. Thanks must go to all who assisted on the day, with making this a great success!

Gary Robbins what a season!!
This shooter has spent a lot of time and effort to get into the County ABT team, but recently took time out, to enter the Mitsubishi Motors World Series,. He went on to win the title of Open Class Champion 2009 with a score of 33/40.
Well done from all your shooting friends!

Date: 2nd August 2009

The weather conditions were near to perfect with sunny skies and little breeze. The competition was well attended with competitors entered in all categories. It proved to be a very busy day for Bisley Gun Club as 16 squads had booked in to shoot.

At the conclusion of the day's shooting, four of the County's Champions had been established, the County Champion had yet to be decided, due to two of the County Shooters, John Offord and Keith Blighton,
returning scores of 98/288. A 'shoot off' for County Champion was conducted under the refereeing skills of Bill Logan (Senior).

The 'Shoot Off'' proved to be entertaining for the spectators as the lead went from Offord to Blighton, changing several times during the round of 25 targets. At the conclusion, John Offord emerged County Champion having beaten Keith Blighton by 1 point to take the title with a 25/71, whereas Keith shot a 24/70.

Gibson gets GB vest

Hannah Gibson has recently gained her GB vest in Olympic skeet. At the 3 selection shoots she has attended she has made 2 finals. The most recent selection shoot was in Scotland where she shot 66/75 this put her joint third going in to the final. Not only was this score equal with the top two olympic skeet ladies but this was a minimum qualifying score, which has qualified her to compete for Great Britain at the World championships in Slovenia in August. Hannah is not the only person from Sussex going to the World championships we have Guy Franklin from Olympic skeet, Steve Scott from Double trap, Charlotte Kerwood and Tom Ward from Olympic Trap.

Team Northall go to Europe

Guy Franklin and Hannah Gibson, went over to Slovenia with coach Dan Kerwood and Guy's Sponsor Rodney Hoffham. They competed in the European Grand prix, in preparation for the world championships, which are being held at the same ground. The Grand prix saw a lot of tough competition. This did not seem to phase Guy who made the Olympic skeet junior men's final and came home with a silver medal. Hannah's first outing abroad proved hard work yet she came home with a bronze medal.

Date:               12th of July 2009

A brave 5 Sussex souls plucked up the courage to compete in the Sussex Double Trap Championship held at NCSC Bisley on the 12th of July. With targets as tricky as ever dancing in the on-coming breeze.  Charlie Milne managed a very credible 108 to just clinch the title and trophy for 2009.  Sussex Veteran winner was once again Paul Pantzer with a 70, and first time out in this discipline Dan Christian with a very fine 97 a well deserved Jnr win.

Discipline:      South East Counties Team Double Trap Championships
Venue:            NCSC Bisley
Date:               19th of July 2009

Exactly one week on was the South East Counties Team Championships of the same discipline.  A hotly contested event with a confident team captain having finally secured Steve Scott and Charlotte Kerwood able to shoot together for once.  The rest of the team being Steve Winsor, Dave Simmons, Charlie Milne, Dan Christian (Jnr), Aaron Smith (Colt), Paul Pantzer (Vet), Natalie Golding (Lady).  On the day things started to go wrong with Natalie unable to attend through illness and horror of horrors Steve Scott phoning 1.5 hours before the squad time to tell me that his young nephew had probably picked up his car keys and buried them somewhere.  With his assurance that he would continue looking.  It soon dawned on me that the County’s no1 Double Trap Olympic hopeful would not be able to make it to the shoot.  Luckily for the rest of the team Mark Ashby (who had just turned up for a bit of practise) was sweet talked into taking Steve’s place.  Feeling slightly less smug the team put in an impressive performance to finish in second position overall out of seven Counties, with Charlotte becoming Regional Lady Champion and Charlie placing second in B Class.  If anyone reading this report happens to see Steve Scott out and about, could you please tell him that Steve Winsor would like a quiet word, thanks.

Hazy sunshine at the NCSC for the Inter-Counties ABT and a keen Sussex Team went to defend the Trophy.  Nobody told us that someone had moaned about the NCSC ABT targets were to high and the NCSC had lowered them with Layout A being the lowest,so Sussex start shooting on Layout A which sounded like a concerto for the hooter!
So we were in a hole which we could not dig out of and ended up in 5th team place with Dan Tarrent saving the Day by winning the Colts.

Tom also won an individual Bronze medal for combined scores from competitions held over 2008 and 2009. He has achieved a world ranking in the junior categories (under 21) of 3rd in the world.

Tom Ward returned triumphant from Granda, Spain with Team GB Gold on Tuesday 2nd June.

The 4 day 200 target event was shot in temperatures of 38 degrees and all competitors’ experienced strong winds and rain on the Saturday.

Tom got of to a good start scoring 46 x 50 and 44 x 50 over the first 2 days. He then went on to drop only 1 target out of his last 100 shooting the last 75 straight. Tom finished on 189 x 200 achieving a new personal best and the Team Gold medal.

This is the first medal Team GB has won for some years and only 4 targets separated the top 3 places.

Tom said that standing on the podium, watching the Union flag being raised while the National anthem was being play was one the highlight of his shooting career.

Glorious sunshine, great targets, great food and great atmosphere – what more can I say.

The reigning champions, Oxfordshire, held their lead right until the last squad was in but Kent emerged the Champions with Oxfordshire in second place and Greater London in third.

The champion after a shoot of with the Essex Junior, Jack Greenleaf, was John Watson from Sussex despite him having a senior moment and losing a target because he forgot to put a cartridge in!!!
The Lady Champion was Trudi Johnston from God’s Own County, the Junior Champion of course was Jack Greenleaf, the Colt Champion was Tom Corbin from Kent and the Veteran Champion was John Watson.

The day ran smoothly and I would like to thank all the team at Dartford for an excellent championship

What a glorious day at Bisley Camp with 15 Sussex entries,it was clear from the start it was going to be a high scoring day with Steve Golding and myself opening with 25 straights and Dave Simmons and Aaron Smith with 24s.
So to final scores now ordinarily Dave Simmons and my score of 97 would be a winner but no someone let Steve Golding have another Miroku and behold a perfect 99, shame he went birds only, making our Chairman Sussex ABT Champion .
Audrey Rex won the ladies on 83 and Graham Webb took the Veterens also 83.
Dan Tarrant won the colts with 92 and Aaron Smith took the juniors with 90 watch out for these two youngsters in the future.
Other notable scores were Charlie Milne 93 with a Side by Side and New face on the scene Gary Robins shot 94.
Our usual thinks to the NCSC for a great day.

Poor turnout did not spoil the day at Invicta Gun Club for the Sussex Helice Championships, bright sunny weather light wind and we still miss the odd one!
So to the scores I managed to Win the seniors with 18ex20 but even with a low turnout it was touch and go with Sussex Colt Aaron Smith hot on my tail with a blistering 17ex 20,if he had not had a target over the fence I might be writing a different report today, John Taylor won the vets on 15ex20, Aaron Smith won the colts on 17ex20 and Audrey Rex won the Ladies with 14ex20.

Thomas Ward’s Olympic Trap season has got off to a cracking start. At the first major Grand Prix event of the year held at Southern County’s in March he won the junior title with a score of 186 x 200 and a gun. His form continued, winning the Britannia Grand Prix title in April while in between qualifying for the Great Britain Universal Trench team.

His form continues and he has just won the British Grand Prix Olympic Trap held in Southern County’s on the 9th/10th May. He was some 7 targets clear of his nearest rival with a score of 186 x 200. Here he picked up a Breitling watch,Beretta shotgun and 3000 Eley cartridges.

He has recently returned from Germany where he represented Great Britain in the Suhl Junior International Competition where 36 countries took part. Although not gaining a podium position,he did shoot a personal best score.

Tom fly’s to Granda in Spain on the 25th May as part of Team GB to compete in the European Championships and if his current form continues a European title is possible.

What a great day at Bisley, all the team were well focused and this showed in the results. The team finished in third place overall out of the six competing counties. Guy Franklin shot 95 and had to have a shoot off for High Gun, but was beaten by H. Noria from GLN, but great shooting anyway. Guy still took the high gun in the Junior class. Steve Franklin put in 76, always great to watch with his unique stile! Dave Marten started slowly, but pulled it back to take the third place in D class. Hannah Gibson shot a 75 to take joint second in the ladies. Charlie Adam put in a 66, not having shot the discipline since September, so very good effort, along with Dan Tarrant's 63, taking second in the colts, only the second time shooting this discipline, again another great effort. Must not forget Martyn Jones score of 65 in the veterans class. Must thank all the shooters who took part for their efforts and great to have a full team for the County in this discipline, not one of the easiest!

A brave 8 Sussex members made the effort to enter the County Championships held at NCSC  on 19th of April.  The attendance was low due in part to the Grand Prix held at Southern Counties on the same day, try as we do it is inevitable to have some same discipline clashes.  I am happy to report that we did however manage to cover a shooter in all 5 categories – Senior, Lady, Veteran, Junior and Colt.  A fresh April morning with the normal Bisley breeze made for testing wind battered targets.  The going was tough for most shooters with the exception our very own Dave Simmons who made it all look easy posting a very convincing 94 ex100 to take the Sussex title and a very well deserved high gun overall.  I was particularly pleased to see two young shooters, namely Aaron Smith and Daniel Tarrant, both of whom shot very well taking the Junior and Colt titles respectively (Aaron 66) (Daniel 75).  The ladies high gun was won by Audrey Rex (47) and Sussex Veteran Barry Heath, after a 33 year lay off from shooting (64).

Dan Tarrant took the Colts title, first time shooting this discipline and finishing on a straight in the last layout !

Sadly no one entered the Junior class, so title not awarded, but well shot also to Aaron Smith in the Colt class.

Discipline: South East Region English Sporting Inter-Counties
Venue: Southdown
Date: 4 & 5th April 2009

Southdown was the venue for this year’s Sporting Inter-Counties which also doubled as the first England Selection Shoot of the year, drawing talented hopefuls from the four corners of the kingdom.

Shot on either Saturday or Sunday, shooters were subjected to the full force of Southdown’s spiteful inventory:
40 yard plus curling crossers, angled battues and an array of long range midis launched from the customary Southdown cranes were particularly difficult to read over the dead ground either side of the lane.

Guns would really have to work hard to build a score over this course of fire and many top internationals had difficulty maintaining their averages.
The average score of the 319 shooters taking part was 73, remarkably low for an event of this type, attracting 47 AAA and 63 AA shooters.

Our own Steve Clark led the field shooting a phenomenal 96 early on Saturday morning in thick drizzly mist. This score stood unchallenged for the entire weekend, despite Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday presenting near perfect conditions.
Well done Steve, a jaw dropping score over an extremely tough layout!

Special mention must also be made of young Dan Tarrant, 12 years old and representing his county for the first time he put in a stonking 80 to take 3rd place in Colts.

Ray Effamy did us proud by winning Vets with a solid 87.

Cheryl Beacham came tantalisingly close to placing in the Ladies, her 66 just one target short of 3rd place Jane Maloney (former Beretta World Champion). Nice one Cheryl!

Sussex Seniors came 3rd with 423 points behind Berkshire on 428 and champions Kent on 441.

Well done to all who took the time and effort to turn up to represent their county. A solid performance on which to build before the Nationals.

Seniors:

Steve Clark 96 (High Gun)
George Digweed MBE 88
Richard Effamy 82
Tom Bury 81
Henry Devall 76

Veteran          Ray Effamy 87 (1st place)

Lady               Cheryl Beacham 66

Junior             Dan Whittaker 78

Colt                 Dan Tarrant 80 (3rd place)

Other notable performances from Sussex shooters were:
Robin Jackman 90 (who missed out on a Senior team place by a whisker), Darren Barton 87 (hang in there Darren, keep shooting like that and you’ll be in County Vest soon!) and Dan Christian, fresh out of Colts on a creditable 81.

A great day out, lovely weather and good company !

Guy Franklin shot an amazing 97/100 to take Junior title and also the overall Sussex County Champion title with the  highest shot of the day. Fantastic shooting. Martin Jones shot 66/100 to take the Veterans County Championship place and Dave Martin shot 85/100 to take the Senior County Championship place. Hannah Gibson shot 82/100 to take the Ladies County Championship title and Dan Tarrant shot 56/100, his first attempt at this discipline, to take the Colts County Championship title. Supporting the team were also Steve Franklin who shot 80/100 and myself, who managed 56/100, first time shooting this and I managed to get one on station eight!

For those people who have not had a go  at these trap disciplines, all I can say is go along, people are friendly and helpful and enjoy themselves. More support is needed!

Discipline: Sussex Single Barrel Championship
Venue: Bisley Gun Club
Date: 15th March 2009

The County Single Barrel Championship was held on Sunday 15 March 2009 at Bisley Gun Club. The event was very well attended by Sussex Trap Shooters. Not only was the weather glorious with warm sunshine and very little wind affecting the targets, there was also some glorious shooting too.

Steve Cole shot a remarkable 98/100 to become the 2009 Single Barrel Champion, the highest score of the day, such shooting also ensured he took the Bisley Gun Club 'Single Barrel' Champion title. well done Steve.

Both the Senior and Veteran titles' were closely contended. Jon Butler shot a magnificent 97/100 to finish one target behind the Champion. John Offord, last year's Champion, took the Veteran's Title with a score of 88/100, closely followed by Richard Plester on 87/100.

Audrey Rex became the County Ladies Champion shooting 71/100 and Aaron Smith, one of the County's up and coming young shots, took the Colt's Title with a score of 79/100.
